Two Down, Two to Go

March 21, 2006 - 1:10 AM

I took my History and Hydraulics finals today, one after the other. In both cases I was one of the first people to finish. My theory is you either know it or you don't (although staying in History for a couple of minutes longer might have actually earned me a couple more points, but that doesn't really matter).

The Numbers Game: Why I'll never have straight A's

The numbers game isn't an actual game, but me calling that makes it sound infinitely more fun than it is in reality. Basically the way it works is that most classes are broken down into percentages, for example in History the breakdown is

Midterm 20%
Final 30%
Quizes 25%
Sections 25%

The first half of the quarter is characterized by hard work. Building the cushion for later. This quarter, I accumulated ~80% of the Quiz percentages (.8*25% = 20%), ~90% of the Midterm (.9*20% = 18%) and I'm assuming I got all of the section points for showing up which means that going into the final I already had 63% of the total grade, or a solid D.

This is where the game begins. I don't study books, I study curves. From my experience, all of my grades have been adjusted in one way or another. It matters more how you did relative to your classmates than to the scale. Anyway, to get an A- in History I would have to score a 90% on the final (27% of the 30%) but getting a solid B would mean I would only need 75% on the final. Suddenly it becomes really clear why B's and C's are so easy to get and why A's are almost unattainable, at least for me.

For the first time since 2003, I've encountered a situation this quarter that is definitely unique. I go in with the opportunity to come out with an A in every single one of my classes. The only problem is that I'd be completely satisfied with all B's.

In either case, I've put myself in a very favorable position and theres not much more that I can do. Well, it's not like I've done anything. Over the weekend I watched all 3 seasons of Arrested Development (Another show that Fox cancelled mad ). bowrofl Well.... two down, two more to go. redface

Cold

March 12, 2006 - 2:31 AM

Wow. Suddenly it feels like I'm in the middle of Yosemite again, outside. For some reason the heater refuses to turn on and it has to be like 40-50* F or less right now, so it's actually colder than it was when we went to Yosemite in December.

Why is it so cold!? tear

Tenth week is rapidly approaching and with it brings good and bad news. The good news is that this quarter is finally coming to an end and the bad news is, well.. this quarter is finally coming to an end, which means tying up all the lose ends and studying my ass off for finals redface I had a presentation, report, and lab due last Friday. I think the presentation went really well. I came in a little late and presented my two slides. I felt a little awkward when he was giving us a review after the presentation and he kind of told everything things they needed to improve and he just told me good job hsdance

Heres my finals schedule:

Mon, Mar 20 - History 21B (1:30-3:30PM)
Mon, Mar 20 - Hydraulics (4:00-6:00PM)
Wed, Mar 22 - Atmospheric Chemistry (8:00-10:00AM)
Thu, Mar 23 - Ocean Biogeochemistry (8:00-10:00AM)

Not bad, I guess. Theres a nice gap between History and Hydraulics for me to study in between and then days seperating the rest. I won't finish until Thursday but that's a small price to pay for study time, I guess.

Anyway, despite the freezing weather, I decided to go out to the beach and take some pictures. I guess partly because of the storm and partly because I has this strange desire to try to revitalize 4MUL8 by any means, even if I have to put my equipment to use. ugh

So at 5:10PM, I left the house to Newport. It usually takes about 35 minutes to get there, which would leave me with just a small amount of time to park and walk to the coast. Of course, with my luck I wouldn't make it. Half way there (I was making damn good time too!) I got pulled over for the first time ugh A stupid rookie cop getting training GAY!! pulled me over and gave me a fix-it ticket for a burnt out tail light. I love how police do NOTHING when my car get jacked, when it gets broken into less than 7 months later but when my rear tail light goes out they're right on it . Thank you for your great community service. rice

It took her 20 minutes to write up the ticket, I'm assuming because she was a newbie ugh After it was all said and done I continued south and ended up arriving just after sunset.

Tough luck I guess but that's how things have been going lately; Downhill.

Oh yeah, some random updates. My D1GP 2006 Opener coverage is online now at tunerzine and uh.. yeah I guess I meant to say random update. redface

I'm going to go get under my 2 blankets and shiver myself to sleep. frown
