don't wake me up, i'm sleeping in

September 30, 2005 - 3:49 AM

For the last three months, I've been relaxing and doing absolutely nothing. I went on a couple of trips, had a couple of gigs but for the most part it was just time away from the daily grind. Then last Friday, all of that came to a devastating end. I guess devestating is too powerful of word, but the good times are over and it's back to the grind.

The good news is that I officially only have 10 weeks to go until the end of this quarter. The bad news is that I have 10 weeks to go until the end of this quarter. For once in my collegiate life my schedule resembles that of an Engineer, which could be considered good or bad. I'm past the halfway point, but the days of "easy" classes are over. The two Engineering classes I'm taking, Fluid Mechanics and Mechanics of Materials (do we see a theme here?) both meet twice a week and the classes are two hours long. So far it seems like we won't be getting a midway break, although it isn't so much the professor's fault as much as it is the girl who keeps chanting, "Let's power through it!!" whenever he asks if we would like a 10 minute break. I guess she doesn't see the value of being able to get up and reorient yourself after an hour and 10 minutes of mumbling (The professor doesn't know how to speak up) and writing down notes that will make no sense later.

Before you think I am exaggerating, no I am not talking about 80 minute classes. These classes are 110 minutes and for the most part the professors of the respective classes are lecturing the entire time! The only solace I have is in my notes which I have decided to begin taking meticulously using highlighters, different colored pens, and my sweet time. I have to admit that although it doesn't help anything make any more sense, it sure keeps me awake during lectures.

The other two classes I'm taking are Earth System Science 51 (It's about Land Interactions) and E8. I am hoping these will be easy A's which will allow me to use them to balance out the two D's I will be getting in my Engineering courses, not that I am being pessimistic! I like to call it realistic, but we will see how things turn out.

Oh yeah, did I mention that both of my Engineering courses are long and boring? It doesn't help that both of them are scheduled late. Very late. I get out of class past 7 everyday, except for Friday which I have started refering to as funday because I actually have the evening free to do things, not that I do things but the prospect have having the potential to plan and/or execute an activity excites me enough to call it Funday, at least until midterm/finals week rolls around and then I probably won't even know what day of the week it is.

As you can see, I'm writing this entry very early. That's the nice thing about sleeping in though, it doesn't really matter when you go to bed. The interesting thing about my schedule is that I can go to sleep at 4AM and still get over 6 hours of sleep. For some reason I've been late to ESS51 (1PM-1:50PM) all three times in the last two weeks.

I guess it doesn't matter whether my schedule starts at 8AM or 1PM, I'm sleeping in. tongue
