don't wake me up, i'm sleeping in

September 30, 2005 - 3:49 AM

For the last three months, I've been relaxing and doing absolutely nothing. I went on a couple of trips, had a couple of gigs but for the most part it was just time away from the daily grind. Then last Friday, all of that came to a devastating end. I guess devestating is too powerful of word, but the good times are over and it's back to the grind.

The good news is that I officially only have 10 weeks to go until the end of this quarter. The bad news is that I have 10 weeks to go until the end of this quarter. For once in my collegiate life my schedule resembles that of an Engineer, which could be considered good or bad. I'm past the halfway point, but the days of "easy" classes are over. The two Engineering classes I'm taking, Fluid Mechanics and Mechanics of Materials (do we see a theme here?) both meet twice a week and the classes are two hours long. So far it seems like we won't be getting a midway break, although it isn't so much the professor's fault as much as it is the girl who keeps chanting, "Let's power through it!!" whenever he asks if we would like a 10 minute break. I guess she doesn't see the value of being able to get up and reorient yourself after an hour and 10 minutes of mumbling (The professor doesn't know how to speak up) and writing down notes that will make no sense later.

Before you think I am exaggerating, no I am not talking about 80 minute classes. These classes are 110 minutes and for the most part the professors of the respective classes are lecturing the entire time! The only solace I have is in my notes which I have decided to begin taking meticulously using highlighters, different colored pens, and my sweet time. I have to admit that although it doesn't help anything make any more sense, it sure keeps me awake during lectures.

The other two classes I'm taking are Earth System Science 51 (It's about Land Interactions) and E8. I am hoping these will be easy A's which will allow me to use them to balance out the two D's I will be getting in my Engineering courses, not that I am being pessimistic! I like to call it realistic, but we will see how things turn out.

Oh yeah, did I mention that both of my Engineering courses are long and boring? It doesn't help that both of them are scheduled late. Very late. I get out of class past 7 everyday, except for Friday which I have started refering to as funday because I actually have the evening free to do things, not that I do things but the prospect have having the potential to plan and/or execute an activity excites me enough to call it Funday, at least until midterm/finals week rolls around and then I probably won't even know what day of the week it is.

As you can see, I'm writing this entry very early. That's the nice thing about sleeping in though, it doesn't really matter when you go to bed. The interesting thing about my schedule is that I can go to sleep at 4AM and still get over 6 hours of sleep. For some reason I've been late to ESS51 (1PM-1:50PM) all three times in the last two weeks.

I guess it doesn't matter whether my schedule starts at 8AM or 1PM, I'm sleeping in. :p

i want to be good... at something

September 26, 2005 - 2:15 AM

I'm so pathetic. I'm a jack of all trades, but a master of nothing. Absolutely. Nothing. It must be great to be a decent car detailer, a decent designer, a decent student, a decent photographer... right? Wrong!

I guess I'm getting greedy. I'd give it all up to be good at any single one of them.

Photography. I think if theres one area I'd want to improve on, this would be it. Now before you school freaks jump on me about being a pretty poor performer in school, let me explain. It's not that it helps me get away. It isn't because it's fun to do or because I've met some of the coolest people through it. Nor is it because it helps me relax. I don't love photography because of any one of these things. I love it because it is all of these things, but at the same time, when I look back at my past work.. it's a little depressing. I'm mediocre at best. I want to improve, but theres no drive. Desire is little without motivation.

I mean, I have all this stuff. Why is it that when someone asks me when the last time I shot was, I have to actually think back several weeks? And even then, theres not much to show for it. Events come once every couple months and I go through the motions, the ones I can remember at least. It's like a completely new experience everytime I go since they're spread so far apart from each other. Why can't I be the guy who takes a picture a day, a fabulous amazing stunning breath-taking moving inspirational picture everyday and posts it on his trendy blog? I don't know.

Theres a bit of reward in sharing the little I know with others and seeing them succeed, but I think the icing on the cake would be to see myself succeed, however selfish that would be. Yeah, I want that icing on the cake. Give it to me... sad

my award

If it's any consolation, I did get this award. I can't be that bad if I'm getting awards, right? :hsugh:

When I'm feeling down, the one thing that always manages to cheer me up is spending money.

Cheer up buddy. wavey

Yosemite

September 15, 2005 - 3:30 AM

I processed and uploaded the Yosemite pictures. It was a fun camping trip. I wrote captions, well some. It's really early right now and you know you need sleep when you're using the word early and you haven't slept yet. hs

Anyway, here we go.

The Brigade Goes Camping - Yosemite

wavey Thanks to Loc, Anne, Duc, Dam, Kim, Tin, Phuong, and Andy for making the trip enjoyable, even if we did lose a lot of time because we couldn't find each other and even if the hike was tiring and even if there were no clouds (Loc :squint tear .

Maybe we'll go back in December/January. wink

new beginnings

September 12, 2005 - 2:51 AM

Yeah right. So a couple days ago my aim windows stopped blinking. You know, that flashing light in the corner of your eye when you're editing a photo, surfing a forum. The intrusive and annoying perpetual flash in your peripheral vision, begging for your attention? Yeah, that one. Well it stopped being so annoying because it stopped flashing and well.. I began to miss the sucker.

Apparently, it is really annoying to have to tab through all your windows to see if someone has said anything new. Compound that with the fact that I am so incredibly popular and you have a big disaster on your hands. So I did what I always do when I encounter a road block, I search for other people who were once in the same situation as me.

The solution? There was no solution. Apparently, the only fix was to format my computer. So here I am, on my laptop, waiting for my computer to finish setting up. A new beginning.. or something like that. I just want my annoying flashing buddy back. Then life can go back to being normal again.

So Random.

September 11, 2005 - 4:46 PM

I edited the code on my random header script to allow you to pick which header you want (as well as adding a couple more). You can actually now click on the random header (top right) to go to the next one. The code is really primative, but it works I guess. :hsugh:

There's one of the new ones. It is completely true as well. :p

Oh yeah, and thanks to Loc for teaching me how to increment a variable by one. locnguyen.org sucks

brand new identity, same old site

September 10, 2005 - 4:35 AM

my logo

I've had this idea in my mind of a little symbol for as long as this site has been around. Yeah, about three years. It transformed from capital PD to lowercase ones, hugging each other. Like an eight with two lines trapping them forever. It wasn't until a freak accident where I ended up with this. I hadn't even realize that it looked sort of like a p and d until after I watermarked 15 images and posted them on a forum. Talk about coincidence.

I added the stupid logo to the icon in the url bar. I hope you all find it annoying. :p

putting my life back together

September 8, 2005 - 7:25 PM

This ends now! bowdown

mamoru I finally got my mean of transportation again. My car. We picked it up yesterday and well, it was covered with grease from the ground up. They rubbed this smelly greasy shit all over my dash, tires, engine bay. ugh I'm still working on getting that nasty smell and greasy feeling off of my interior. The good news is it runs and it starts. I have RT615s now. I'm not really sure I like the look of these rims though, I miss my old ones. Too bad I couldn't find any bronze circuit 10s anymore. frown

I need to detail it. They seriously marred up all my paint. I told the idiots not to detail or wash it, but I guess they can't listen to directions. They told me the day before it was finally done that they couldn't give it to me that day because they had to detail it and do quality testing (all the lights etc.). When I get it back one of the fog light housings is broken (looks like they only took one screw out and then tried to remove it, bending the mount and snapping the plate), the fogs don't light up, my headlights don't light up, missing spare tire. Quality testing my ass. ugh ugh

Oh well. frown I rewired the foglights and bypassed my headlight harness yesterday. Today I put the lips I painted on. Looks ok, I guess.

Anyway, pictures because that's all you fools care about anyway.

Lens evolution

September 7, 2005 - 9:05 PM

This little graphic is more for my personal enjoyment than anything. Start at the top line and move down. I've evolved from a zoom junkie into the prime minister. mamoru

Honestly, if you're wondering what lens to buy or what range to start off on, just get everything and evolve your lens line-up over time. Find what works for you, that is why... folks, that is why there are so many choices. bowdown

Neglected.

September 6, 2005 - 1:25 PM

I have been neglecting this site, mostly because theres really nothing uplifting to say. There still isn't.

I suppose an update is well overdue but it's so hard to do. Not because I have nothing positive to update on, but because I'm so backed up. It's kind of like school, when you fall behind in a class and catching up and doing the latest homework assignment is really doing 10. It's something like that, I guess.....

It seems to be insurmountable task, so I'll just start at the very beginning of it all.

Ben Hernandez Photography Sucks. Honestly, if you ever felt the need to be deceived, lied to, tricked, and conned into shooting soccer, the man you would need to visit is Ben Hernandez. I was introduced into shooting soccer by Loc in March. It seemed easy enough, stand around on the side and snap some pictures. Turn them in and go home.

Simple right? Shoot, get paid, buy stuff with your hard earned money. Not so fast....

I shot several more times between March and June without getting a single paycheck. Everytime it was mentioned, Ben sort of put it off. A different excuse everytime. Sometimes it would be, "I left you a message" (even though there was no voicemail) and other times it would be, "Let me check in on it and I'll get back to you", but there was never a response. When we finally got paid (Loc, Chris, and I were going through the same problems), our check, five weeks overdue, was 16 hours short.

Not so simple. I continued to call and e-mail Ben trying to get a hold of my pay, which now included a weekend of June 25-26.

Fixing a mistake . How long does it take to check somebody's hours, find out that you short changed their paycheck and then cut them a check for the amount you owe them? For a responsible business owner, not very long. For Ben Hernandez?

Let me measure how long in terms of things that have happened (killing two birds with one stone) in the time I've been dealing with Ben's bullshit. I made Deans' List last quarter with a GPA over 3.5 :'). I went to Sedona with Loc and Tim, San Simeon with Loc, Tim, and Chris. My car was stolen. I got a B in Organic Chemistry 51A and a B in 51LA (lab) during summer school. I made my blog titles dynamic font/images I detailed Jason's tC and redetailed my dad's MR2. I painted my new lips. I ordered a 580EX from Dell. I sold my Sigma EF-500 Super DG. Then they canceled my 580ex order and lied to me, telling me that the cancellation was because Canon discontinued their year old lens. I won an xbox 360. I shot The Formula Drift Finals at Irwindale. I sold my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 to Aaron. I went to Yosemite with the Brigade +others (Loc, Anne, Duc, Tin, Dam, Phuong, Andy, Kim).

Let me first say that having your car stolen is probably one of the most incredibly inconvenient and upsetting things that could ever occur to a person. My car was stolen from in front of MSTB (Lot 12A) while I was in O Chem Lab, one week before the end of Summer Session I.

They threw all my glove contents onto the floormat..

Ripped all the wires running to my steering column out.

Jacked my imitation rims (Rotas. :hsugh: )

No more sub. No more amp.

Ripped the trunk release apart..

Broke my steering column up pretty bad.

Apparently, my steering column talked some shit on their mommas.

It's been over 5 weeks... To put things into perspective, the last time I filled up my gas tank, 87 gas was selling for 1.97. What's the hold up? Honda World.

It's the same shit all over again, with a different person. I call Sheridon Bailey (the guy handling my claim) and he gives me the run around. First estimate of completion was 2 weeks ago. I called him then and he told me they had to order a dash which was fine with me. He told me that my rims were backordered so I gave him contact of someone else who could provide him with the rims. Call back again a week later and it still isn't done. Parts came in already, but he couldn't get a hold of the number I gave to him (he never called to tell me about this). Fine, I hand deliver rims to him. No reimbursement for that yet. I leave for Yosemite, should be done while I'm gone and when I get home... no car. I call him today and he says today by 6, maybe. I ask him what is going on and he tells me that they just got the car back from alignment and that they have to clean it up. I tell him that it's ok and I'll pick it up without it getting "detailed" since I'm now down with that anyway and this is what he tells me:

"We can't do that because we're charging the insurance for it". HOW INCREDIBLY SHADY IS THAT? So they're going to charge the insurance with a huge detailing fee for their shitty work. Give me a fucking break and give me my car back. madrun

Anyway, so that's what's happened so far. I still haven't gotten all of my money from Ben. A tip of advice for anybody reading this. If you're ever offered the opportunity to shoot soccer make sure it is not with Ben Hernandez Photography . Save yourself the trouble. You won't get paid anyway, might as well do it for your own enjoyment and actually get to keep the photos you shoot so you can see how you need to improve. Ben Hernandez is a dead-end you don't want to find yourself in.

Ben Hernandez, Sheridon Bailey, Ankush (the guy from Dell who lied to me), the people who stole my car: You can all diaf.
